I have worked at the Open University since 1992 and am currently Senior Lecturer in Astrophysics. Over the years I have been Director of Research for the Physics and Astronomy Department, Curriculum Director for Astronomy and Planetary Science, and Departmental Director of External Relations. I am now Associate Programme Director for Physics and Astronomy & Planetary Science, based in the Department of Physical Sciences.

I am a Fellow, Council Member and Vice President of the Royal Astronomical Society and also serve on its Membership Committee and its Diversity Committee. I  am Director of the OU's George Abell Observatory, which is used for a variety of research, teaching, training and outreach activities. I was co-Chair of the 2004 RAS National Astronomy Meeting and deputy organiser of the exhibit "Is there anybody out there? Looking for new worlds" at the 2008 Royal Society Summer Science Exhibition.

 

Public Engagement & Outreach

I am a Public Engagement Ambassador for the National Co-ordinating Centre for Public Engagement (www.publicengagement.ac.uk) and a STEMNET Ambassador (http://www.stemnet.org.uk/).

Here's a 2 minute video I made on "Why study physics?" and here are some cartoons I helped make on "60 second Adventures in Astronomy".

I regularly present talks to School groups and Astronomical societies, as well as to Cubs or Brownies, the U3A or WI, and other general audience talks at science festivals and museums. Currently I am able to offer the following presentations:

  • Planets and the Solar System: An interactive talk suitable for children aged 5 - 9 using a set of inflatable planets, and linked to my exoplanet story book (Oogle-Flip and the Planet Adventure). Needs a room the size of a school hall, and suitable for groups of up to 100.
  • The Life and Death of Stars - we are made of star-stuff!: A demonstration lecture available in two versions - one suitable for children aged 10-12 and another suitable for children aged 13-15, or for family audiences, which explores the life cycle of stars and the origin of the chemical elements.
  • Exoplanets and How to Find Them: A demonstration lecture suitable for ages 16+ or for astronomical societies, or family audiences. Various models are used to illustrate the techniques by which planets around other stars are detected and a brief summary of the recent discoveries in this area, including those from the SuperWASP project which I am part of.
  • Gamma-ray Bursts: an astronomical detective story: A highly illustrated talk suitable for ages 16+ or for astronomical societies, which describes how the mystery of the origin of gamma-ray bursts was solved.
  • The New Cosmology or How the Universe Works: A highly illustrated talk suitable for ages 16+ or for astronomical societies, which describes the remarkable new theories concerning the origin and evolution of the Universe.
  • Magnetic Compact Stars: A more technical talk suitable for advanced astronomical societies looking for something linked closely to ongoing research, concerning white dwarfs and neutron stars.

Teaching Interests

As Associate Programme Director for Physics and Astronomy & Planetary Science, I oversee the content and presentation of the Physical Science curriculum at the OU, supported by my Qualifications Manager, Gill Knight. I have developed the Physics and Astronomy & Planetary Science pathways through the OU's BSc (Hons) Natural Sciences degree and led the process by which the Institute of Physics accredited a route through our qualifications suitable for students wishing to obtain Chartered Physicist status.

My Teaching interests currently focus on:

  • Chairing the presentation team of the Level 3 module:  S383 The Relativistic Universe
  • Working as part of the team that is revising our Level 2 module: S207 The Physical World.

In the past I have been involved with:

  • Chairing the production teams for both: S382 Astrophysics and  S383 The Relativistic Universe
  • Working as part of the production team for the Level 1 module S104 Exploring Science, where my book, entitled 'Quarks to Quasars', covers the physics of the very small and the very large - from particle physics to cosmology.
  • Developing and presenting the Astronomy and Planetary Science Practical module, SXR208 Observing the Universe, which ran at the Observatori Astronomic de Mallorca from 2004 - 2011.

I served as External Examiner for the School of Physics and Astronomy at Manchester University from 2008 - 2011, and am External Examiner for Physics and Astronomy at Southampton University from 2012 onwards.

Research Interests

My bibliography includes just over 100 refereed journal papers (almost 200 research publications in total) which have accumulated more than 2700 citations. For over 40 of the refereed journal papers, the lead author was either myself or a postgrad/postdoc for whom I was principal supervisor. I have an h-index of 29.

A complete bibliography of all my published work is available, containing links to downloadable PDF files. As well as refereed journal articles and conference papers, this list also includes text books, videos, TV programmes, software packages and experiment designs that I have produced. My Research interests include:

  • Observations and modeling of Magnetic Cataclysmic Variables, in particular multi-wavelength observations of Intermediate Polars and modelling of their accretion flows
  • Observations and modeling of High Mass X-ray Binaries, in particular radial velocity studies of eclipsing systems to determine masses of neutron stars and black holes.
  • General time domain astrophysics, including wide field surveys for binary stars and transiting exoplanets using SuperWASP.

I am currently a member of the SuperWASP project and am part of the UK consortium which is a shareholder in the Southern African Large Telescope. I was a member of the Science consortium for the PLATO exoplanet mission (2009 - 2011) during its proposal phase and I am co-editor of the international Exoplanet Newsletter.
